Buying A Business In Australia

Australia is a vast country equivalent in size to North America but, unlike the USA, is populated by only about 21 million people. They largely reside on the east coast which takes in the states of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. On the west coast the largest state, Western Australia, is booming (essentially mining country) and the home of Perth. In the middle, at the top, we have Darwin in the Northern Territory and at the bottom the city of churches Adelaide, in South Australia.

Buying a business becomes a difficult task to someone new to the country, so let’s look at the ways to go about it and the ways you can do your homework, before leaving for Australia.

Business brokers offer assistance in finding a business. They are essentially sellers of existing businesses, placed in their hands by sellers relying on their expertise. There is a cost of course and this is negotiated with the broker who may then advertise the business.

Newspapers are a natural place for people selling their business, or seeking franchisors to market their business. Newspaper advertisements tell little about the business beyond the basics, and have to be thoroughly followed up to obtain the real story.

Specialist publications such as Coast to Coast Business Advertiser go that one step further and present everything from major franchisors to small one man operator businesses. The advantage of these publications is that advertisements are supported by photos of the location, the business or the product for sale, which gives a buyer insight into what he or she may be buying.
