Cruising the Whitsundays

There can be few more satisfying moments than eating a freshly caught fish, on a boat where you are the skipper, whilst securely anchored alongside a tropical island...heaven!

The best way to have this experience in Australia is to take a boating holiday in the Whitsundays, a group of islands off the coast of North Queensland.

Situated within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the region is a safe boating area - and most people take the option of a bare boat charter to make the most of it. This means you are the 'Skipper' so you can generally go where you please and do what you want.

The choice of boat type is entirely yours. Catamarans, yachts and motor cruisers are all available, so the decision rests largely with each individual's experience. For instance, motor cruisers are easier to handle than yachts.

Once you decide on your vessel type, instruction is given, safety equipment explained, operation of the two way radio practised - until such time as you are comfortable and confident in their use.

Now you are underway, boating in some of the world's most picturesque waterways, the Whitsunday Islands, with their fringing coral reefs, secure hide-away anchorages and great fishing. A number of islands in the group are home to tourist resorts. Generally, you are able to moor off these islands, go ashore, and enjoy the facilities available. They are also great places for children to learn new skills, or simply have fun with others.

There is a charge, but a restaurant cooked meal and some entertainment could be a welcome break for the cook. Most charter companies will stock your boat with everything you need for your holiday. Items like food and drink will incur an additional cost Ð worth it for a totally stress-free holiday.

From April to October the daytime temperature is 20 - 24 degrees celsius and 14 -18 degrees celsius at night. November to March sees an increase to 24 -30 degrees celsius and 18 -26 degrees celsius at night. The beautiful blue waters remain in the vicinity of 20 -22 degrees celsius all year round.

As is usual in Australia, care should be taken when out in the sun. Take hats for all, and plenty of sunscreen.

For certified divers, scuba gear is available so you can see the maginificent reefs and their occupants close up - a natural blaze of colour and excitement.

For those who wish to experience the joy of ownership, it is easy to purchase a vessel for use when you wish. To reduce the costs involved, some charter companies will manage the chartering of your boat.

What better way to go - an investment with a good return, and a load of fun thrown in!

With the protection of the Great Barrier Reef and the islands in the region, anyone can enjoy a safe and exciting boating holiday. All that is necessary is basic boating experience coupled with common sense and a taste for tropical delights.
